Balamtok All-Stars!
Nothing gets your heart pumping more than an honest fight against Ixchel.
Crack open a Tortugade, because it’s time to talk about the Champion of the Ajaw Tournament! Known as the Queen of the Arena to her fans, Ixchel is coming off a great season this year, with a whopping 83 victories, even surpassing her long-time rival, Pich the Slayer. “Nothing gets your heart pumping more than an honest fight against Ixchel,” Pich said in an interview after coming out of the ring. “She loves this game more than anyone out there.”
Ixchel appeared at the awards ceremony on Uxmal Beach last night to claim the Ajaw Trophy. During her acceptance speech, she sent the crowd into an uproar after making the shocking announcement that she will not be returning as a full-time fighter next season. Instead, she will be joining the Lancers in Acme to support their efforts in preserving the Shardverse. A controversial decision amongst Balamtok Leaders, the Shamans were left in a tizzy after learning the news, as Ixchel allegedly had not discussed her pending contract with them prior.
An anonymous source stated that Ixchel had hosted an unofficial tournament in the Ceiba Outskirts two weeks ago against the Lancers. She agreed to the terms that if one Lancer could beat her in the arena, she would join their ranks. Ixchel won her match against every Lancer, all except Jaguar. Jaguar challenged her to fight outside the arena without her audience support. After nearly a three hour fight, Ixchel admitted defeat. According to our source, Ixchel felt that Jaguar did not fight cleanly. He used traps and tricks to gain the upper hand. Even still, Ixchel remained true to her word and agreed to join the Lancers.
During a press interview earlier this week, Ixchel promised she has no plans to abandon her responsibilities to Balamtok. She will still participate in ritual combat, and remain an active member of the Balamtok leaders. “I will continue to be the leader you all know me to be,” Ixchel stated. “The only thing that has changed is that I fight not only for Balamtok, but for all the Shards.”
It will be interesting to see how next season plays out without Balamtok’s star fighter. Experts say Pich is the new favourite to win, however there are some keen up-and-comers to keep an eye on. Read more in the Fighter Breakdown next week.
