A Day in the Life of Dex

Some people are very fond of lizards as pets. Naturally, they want to know all about Dex.

Heyyyy Lizard Lovers! I’ve got a story you won’t want to miss. Last week’s edition on the Marine Iguana was special, but now, I’ve got an even special-er story for you. So sit back and relax, my lizard-obsessed friends, because today I’m talking about the Gektaras! Yes, the rumoured humanoid lizards from another Shard are REAL. When one of them arrived on Acme, I knew I had to meet them. I begged and pleaded and FINALLY, Dex (Acme’s first Gektara Lancer) agreed to let me spend the day with him.

I could hardly sleep from the excitement of meeting a real Gektara, so I arrived at Dex’s place early. Way early. Around 6AM. Seeing him for the first time was probably the best moment of my entire life. And trust me, his scales are even more illustrious up close. Like other lizards, I theorize that scales help provide the Gektaras with natural defenses and camouflage abilities. As I was thinking about this very interesting fact, Dex's tiny lizard buddy poked out from behind his shoulder. The tiny lizard was SO CUTE, though Dex did not let me pet it.

After admiring Dex for a while, it was time to begin his daily routine. He took me on a “light jog” around the entire periphery of Acme. Well, reader, I made it a quarter way through and I was basically dying (I’m a lizard lover, not an athlete). Dex saw me struggling, so he offered to give me a piggyback ride. Obviously, I did not hesitate for a second when taking him up on the offer. “I do this for the hatchlings back home,” he said as he hoisted me up. To be very honest, seeing the world atop the shoulders of a Gektara has changed me.

Dex then took me to the Card Plaza in Blackmarket. I thought we were there to trade, until Dex plopped himself down at the corner of the crowded street. “There is little peace in Acme,” he said, closing his eyes. “You must learn to make your own.” So I joined him in his meditation session. I got quite distracted by the hustle and bustle, but Dex never did. He did not fidget once, even when a little kid in the crowd started yanking on his hair. Either Dex is as steady as he appears, or he wears a wig. There is no evidence on whether the Gektaras grow hair, so, I am unable to draw an accurate conclusion.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in combat training. Dex is a masterful fighter. Watching him practise his various stances and techniques was inspiring. When Dex tried to show me how to do them, I simply fell flat on my face. Suffice to say, the Gektara seem to have an improved physical strength. My hypothesis is that the Gektara would have evolved to be the dominant species of our Shard had they not experienced an extinction event in their early epoch. We could’ve all been lizards….what a shame…

In the evening, we ordered an arthropod pizza and watched a bunch of classic films from his home Shard. Can I just say… lizard Westerns are something else. There were no subtitles, so Dex translated it back to me line for line. He became surprisingly emotional when the leading lizard swam off into the sunset. I still had no idea what was going on, but I let him enjoy the moment.

My day with Dex is not one I will quickly forget. The Gektara are fascinating creatures. So, if you have more questions, please send them into ScalyWags. Until then, I will be searching for a way to safely transport myself to the Gektara Shard and learn even more about them.
